A Little Bit of History!
In 1908 St Pauls Operatic Society performed The Waterman and HMS Pinafore at St Pauls schoolroom to rapturous reviews (so we believe!).
1910 saw performances of Yeoman of the Guard and The Mikado – Gilbert & Sullivan operettas that we have performed over subsequent years due to their popularity.
Due to the outbreak of war in 1914, HMS Pinafore was to be the last performance until 1921, when we staged wonderful performances of Trial by Jury and The Ancient Mariner.
The 1930’s saw the society expanding its repertoire, performing Ruddigore (1930) and Princess Ida (1937) for the first time. Sadly, 1938 and the performances of HMS Pinafore & Trial by Jury were to be the last until 1948.
Throughout the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas proved to be our most popular and most requested performances.
In 1980 we broke with our Gilbert & Sullivan tradition and performed The Merry Widow, an operetta by Franz Lehar, followed in 1981 by The Land of Smiles, also by Franz Lehar.
Continuing to stage at least one performance per year, which now include modern musicals, St Pauls Operatic Society has grown in stature and reputation as an operatic society that produces great shows and concerts with highly talented singers and performers.
Why not join us for an evening of song and fun? –
